Journal 8 Mohamed Jama

Part I

I was touched by the essay "The Idea of Local Economy" in the Presence of Fear. I like the paragraph where the author mentions how "most of the people in the developed world have given proxies to the corporations to produce and provide all their food, clothing and shelter"(p13). I believe the main take away is the problem that people in the western world have given the opportunity to corporations or a few of rich individuals to monopolize everything from food, clothing to services such education, health and insurance businesses. I don’t  know how a handful of corporations are able to process the whole countries food? It is mystery to me. However, I believe the problem is the industrialization of everything plus the government regulations that are always in favor for the rich.

In the Fresh documentary, I did research more about the term "sharecropping". Sharecropping is a system where the landlord/planter allows a tenant to use the land in exchange for a share of the crop. Sharecropping used to be a well-known method of farming which was popular in America during the slavery time.

  1. I also noticed the mention of "sharecropping." I learned about sharecropping in my literature class last semester when we watch "The Grapes of Wrath". I believe it was a common system even before the times of slavery and industrialization. I think this would be a good research paper if you want to make it one.

  3. Great post Mohamed! We are all constrained into paying large corporations for our recourses. Corporate power has a strong hold on the lives of many Americans. We need to support more local stores. We need to support small farm owners and spend the extra dollar to help with those businesses.

  4. Great post. I also talked about how it is crazy to think that as Americans we give almost everything over to the bigger companies that monopolize off of us. It really made me ask questions just like you did. How can a company have so much power is produces so much of our food. It really gets you asking questions. How do we go back to how things were before. If there is a possible way. Great post
