Journal 5 -- Heather Campbell

Cliff jumping, something I would call the ultimate adrenaline rush. Cliff jumping (AKA cliff diving) is actually illegal in Ohio, however that doesn't stop many people. I myself am someone who goes cliff jumping, consider me an adrenaline junkie. The way that places to cliff jump gets passed around is just through other people who cliff jump, no designated places for people to go, no places advertise cliff jumping, the only places that advertise it are out of state, although I've never gone cliff jumping out of state.
A way that a lot of people initially get into the cliff jumping subculture is through things like rope swings that hang above a lake. Even though it isn't merely on the same scale of cliff jumping, it boosts adrenaline so quickly it leaves you wanting more. The subculture within cliff diving that I'm writing about are the people who dive from over 5 stories high. The way people do this isn't over a lake because the lake could be too shallow and the landing would not be good. Places like Puerto Rico are great places to go cliff jumping because there are places they could recommend to be safer to cliff dive. The most agonizing part of cliff jumping is feeling all of the anticipation building inside while you hike to wherever you're jumping from. Most places don't have stairs that lead up to the cliff from the water because of how risky it could be to put stairs on the side of the cliff due to all the water and possible corroding into rust. Some places will build makeshift PCP pipe stairs to help people out however, once you jump you're too eager to care about the hike back, after the jump it leaves you craving another.

  1. I never knew cliff jumping was an actual thing. I would personally never go cliff jumping. I admire your courage and bravery. I would be too scared to jump off a cliff, I am not a big fan of heights.

    1. A lot of my friends are the same way and will actually come along with us just for the hike... they never look over the edge though, haha

  2. I have never been cliff jumping but it looks like so much fun! I know a lot of people who have been cliff jumping. I'm always scared about the water being to shallow. I was a lifeguard in the summer, so I've heard some horror stories. But thanks for the information, ill have to go out of town to go cliff jumping.

  3. This is a very interesting subculture. I did not know that it was illegal in Ohio, so that's something new. It also sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't think I would have the guts to do it.

  5. Cliff Jumping would be next thing I would do, but it does sound scary, specially when jumping or diving from 5 stories high, that would require proper body position so that I could go through the water.
