As I grew up, I found myself being involved in a rather unique subculture. This subculture was Legos. I began playing with Legos in the third grade. I don’t really know why I was so interested in them but I would play with them all the time. In fifth grade, our class got a new student named Jacob Hill. He loved Legos a lot too, and we became friends very quickly. We were fanatics about Legos until high school, then we kind of just gave it up because it wasn’t very mainstream with people at that age. Legos in general sort of fall off for people as they get older, but not everyone. I think Legos are an important subculture in America today.
Legos are important because they really help with developing creativity. Legos are mostly popular with younger children. Legos can really help to teach children how to use their imagination as well as their critical thinking skills. There are still adults that adore Legos and make careers out of it.
Legos can also help people form friendships. I give Legos credit to helping me find my best friend of my early childhood. I have seen a lot of young children work together and become friends while building their creations at a Legoland that I once visited. Legos can really help to teach people basic team cooperation skills and how to work together to design something.
There are a lot of subcultures that make up America today. Some very complex, some very risk-taking. Something as simple as a pile of plastic may not sound like a very important subculture, but to me it is very valuable for younger generations, and can also benefit adults.

I was never any good at building things out of legos, even when I had the instructions to go with it. I also don't really have the patience for it, either. I think it's interesting how you found a subculture in a type of toy.
ReplyDeleteSome of the really big kits can take a lot of patience to build them. I spent about 8 hours on Christmas day one time building one giant box of legos.
DeleteI like your comment on the importance of a simple subculture. Like you said, there are many complex or risky subcultures. A simple subculture is refreshing in a way.
ReplyDeleteIt can be fun to partake in risky subcultures but it is also relaxing to participate in fundamental and easy-going subcultures as well.
DeleteMy cousin who is 19 actually still collects and builds lego stuff he finds it fun and relaxing. He actually has a whole room dedicated to lego's in his basement where he plans to build a whole city of lego's
ReplyDeleteI have all of mine stashed away in a spare bedroom. Sometimes I will just take a look at them and remember the times I would play with them.
DeleteI have played with Legos when I was little. I also remember losing some of the pieces too.
